Traps
2017/Barbed wire /31x190cm
This artwork is a fishnet sculpture, made by wire. It depicts the feeling being trapped, as similar to the fishes being caught by the net. Hence, I named it as “Traps”. At the same time, the net also reflects the barbed wire, surrounded the border of my hometown, I recalled from my childhood’s memories.
Being out from the village to the city for the college over the past two years, I felt suffocated by the busy city life and was uneasy to adapt for a while. It gave me the feeling of being trapped. I also felt that I did not belong to the city. This work explores my origin and identity through childhood memories.
My hometown, when I was young, was the place where I could meet a lot of fishermen. Fishing was their daily life and fishing net was an important tool for them. They cast their nets every day. My work was inspired by the fishing net and allowed the viewers to cast the net themselves to form a different shape of the sculpture.
