Disappearance
2017/Aluminum Foil /20x30cm
This artwork was inspired by the disappeared hills in Hong Kong Island. I unexpectedly found that Morrison Hill was actually a hill before. It was flattened to make way for buildings years ago. I then found that other five hills, namely Lee Garden, Korn Hill, Tai Wan Shan, Kwun Chung Shan, Sacred Hill, and Cheung Shan, had the same fate. This reflects that the land in Hong Kong is scarce because of its hilly landscape. My work reminds us of the rapid landscape change of Hong Kong in exchange for economic growth.
I use the aluminum foil to shape the contour of the seven hills. There are two sculptures representing each hill displaying side by side - one was fully filled with aluminum foil and another one was hollow inside. The sparkling texture of the foils reflects the wealth of the city. This work reminded us how the hilly landscape being scarified in the midst of economic growth.
